This course is designed to be an introduction to the Swedish language and culture. Students will be taught at the beginner's level with a focus on practical Swedish words and phrases. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to engage in conversation with local Swedes throughout this program.
In this course, we will try to understand just how much Swedish society is changing and how it is affecting the country and its citizens. We will explore the political, economic and social ramifications and determine the benefits as well as the problems that arise. Some topics that will be covered are the Welfare State, gender equality, the educational system and linguistic changes. Starting as far back as the Vikings, we will identify beliefs and values that helped shape modern day Sweden and examine if this cultural mindset hinders or help in a multicultural society. We will study traditional Swedish culture and research how the influence of other cultures is changing customs and traditions.
